Dropshipping vs Affiliate Marketing: Which One Actually Pays?
October 6, 2026 · 6 min read
Both let you sell without holding stock. The difference is who owns the customer, and that changes everything.
How affiliate marketing works
You promote someone else's product and get a cut of each sale, often 5 to 30 percent. You never touch the customer, the price, or the product.
How dropshipping works
You run your own store, set your own prices, and keep the full margin. A $15 product sold at $45 is $30 yours, not a small commission.
The control difference
With affiliate links, the brand can cut commissions or cancel the program overnight, and your income goes with it. With your own store, the customer list, the brand, and the revenue are yours.
Which should you pick
If you want zero responsibility, affiliate marketing is simpler. If you want to build something you own with bigger margins per sale, dropshipping wins. Most people who try both end up preferring owning the store.
